Looking for other 20somethings to start a monthly book club. I read mostly contemporary literary fiction mixed in with some modern classics. Favorites include Nabokov (currently re-reading Lolita for the second time), Murakami, Joyce, Woolf, and Faulkner. I'm open to any sort of book club but I definitely want it to be socially oriented -- I'd love to meet people with whom I could not only discuss books but also grab an after work drink or dinner or drop by a museum or see a movie. Let me know if you're interested.
Do you get as engrossed in historical nonfiction as others do in Harry Potter or Twilight? Do you also have a taste for well-written prose? Then this is the book club for you.
Each month, we will pair one work of nonfiction with one work of fiction. The fiction work will discuss the same time period/event/place/person/etc. as the nonfiction work.
This idea came to me when I was reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I was fascinated by the historical background of the novel -- namely the Dust Bowl of the 1930s -- and I wanted to learn more. So I read The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan, a National Book Award winner that offers a social and political history of that period.
Our pairings would be of a similar ilk.
Please shoot me an email if you are fellow history and novel buff who would like to join!
Hello, I am looking to start a reader's circle/bookclub for women in their mid 20s starting out in their careers and looking for a new group of women to get to know. Ideally, it would be something that meets up once or twice a month and focuses on professional development books and life changing biographies. The group would choose a book to read once a month and once meeting up have it be more than a book club. Something interactive over a meal (breakfast, brunch, or lunch) full of discussion. My goal for this book club is for it to be a group of women seeking to build strong professional and personal relationships with other women in the NYC area. I'm alone with the idea right now and open to so much more suggestions!
Contact me at booksandbrunching@gmail.com if you're interested, able to give suggestions, etc.
My friend and I met in a book club a couple years ago and as things have changed over the years, we're looking to start a new group of fun 20-somethings to meet up once a month at bars/cafes or apartments to hang out, snack and of course discuss the book of the month! We enjoy reading a variety of books, but some of favorites from our previous book club were, "The Paris Wife," "Water For Elephants," and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." We're planning to meet on Wednesdays somewhere on the west side (we both live on the upper west). Send me an email at muller.liz@gmail.com if you're interested and hopefully we can get a group together soon!
